I just read this article that was published yesterday in the New York Times online publication regarding the rising rates of obesity in this country.  It left me feeling very disappointed knowing that our society continues to become more overweight, especially with all of the knowledge we have about the benefits of a proper diet and exercise.  What bothers me is that the awful eating habits that have over 30 percent of people obese in nine different states are the same eating habits we, as a society, are teaching our younger generations.  This is ridiculous to me, and unacceptable.

I would argue you that America needs some damn CrossFit in their lives! America listen to me! Put down the chips, soda, and Little Debbie snacks and put in some work!  There is a CrossFit gym near you, so get after it!  In all seriousness though, Americans need to stop allowing their jobs dictate their health.  How many people do we know that will say I work 12 hour days and can’t get to the gym?  Or that their boss keeps them at the office too long?  It’s crazy to think how you can put a job over your health.  Our health is what allows us to take on the everyday tasks, so let’s get education about exercise and nutrition, and let’s stop making excuses for ourselves, America!

“AWESOME” video by Patrick Cummings of Again Faster

I’m sure many of you have seen this short video, but the reaction from the people walking by is absolutely priceless.  The video features Goose, Amy, and Pat of CrossFit Southie (www.crossfitsouthie.com)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”

Patrick Cumming’s (Again Faster) Video “Belief”

One of my favorite videos out there.  To me, belief is the only thing that keeps you moving forward when things gets difficult. It’s belief that quiets that little voice inside your head when it’s telling you that you can’t go on anymore.  It’s belief that allows any CrossFit athlete to accomplish feats that others assume can’t be done.

DAY TO DAY

After a much need vacation last month in Europe with my wife (that’s me in front of O’Brien’s Castle while visiting the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland), I came back refreshed and ready to enjoy a summer without work, and a whole lot of CrossFit, before entering into my first semester at MIT Sloan.  I mean when am I ever going to get another chance to have a summer vacation. Plus, I hear from all of the second-year students that the core curriculum is nothing short of brutal.  Given that my schedule will be at the mercy of classes, core team meetings, and other networking events, I was looking forward to focusing on my programming.   However, I’ve been sidelined for the last week by a back muscle strain.   I guess I would describe it as a day-to-day injury and just hope that I can get back to my training within the next 7 days.

Anyone that has made an effort to get to the CF Games understands the determination and consistency in your training that is required to get ready for qualifiers.  It’s a minor setback, but I’m ready to make up the lost time as soon as my body tells me that I’m ready to continue.

In the meantime, I will be posting and commenting on various subject matters related to CrossFit.  This blog will not be solely to give you a look into my own experiences, but bring you great stories from the world of CrossFit and business school.

As the title indicates, this is an experiment on how I will be able to handle both CrossFit and everything that comes with business school.  This should be interesting…3,2,1…Go!

Patience and perseverance have a magical affect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.

WHAT IS CROSSFIT?  WHY THIS BLOG?

As I thought about what my first blog post should be, I wasn’t sure what to focus on. To be honest, I’ll probably write this blog entry and have no readers. Anyway, in typical Luis fashion, I’ve decided to give you a brief introduction CrossFit and the very ambitious goals I’ve set for myself.  Here goes…

Some of you reading this post may be currently in an MBA program, or may have already earned your MBA.  During the next couple of years, I will be pursuing two goals.  One will be to train as hard as I can to get to the CrossFit Games, as an individual competitor or an athlete on an affiliate team.  The truth is, if I make it that far it will probably be as a member of an affiliate team. The second is to complete my MBA from MIT Sloan and secure a job that will let me pay off the insane amount of student loans I’ll have accumulated by May 2012.

So let’s get to it, What is CrossFit? Here’s how Coach Glassman, Creator &  CEO of CrossFit, defines CrossFit:

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. “

Simply put, CrossFit is the “Sport of Elite Fitness”.  I believe that watching the video is a perfect introduction to CrossFit and it’s culture.

The next two years should be a wild, but fun ride!
